Many years ago, with a thriving activity affected by a sudden drop in turnover, I found myself holding a list of prospect companies from the website of a trade association.
In fact, they weren’t prospects: they were just “suspects”.
I was the classic “Owner”, I had no vendors, and I was surrounded by technicians and a very administrative and very little commercial part-time secretary. Also, I didn’t trust call centres, and I didn’t know any sprint-mom who could make any phone calls for me. Nor would I have known how to explain to her what she should have had to say.
So, I did the oldest thing in the world: I started calling everyone, one by one, by myself.
It wasn’t pleasant: it was a violence I made to myself every time I picked up the phone.
It’s a fact, accustomed to talking to European managers of the most prestigious multinationals, which I knew, and they knew me, I had to suddenly start making phone calls to illustrious strangers from a list taken down from a website.
I still remember those afternoons: every time I dialled a number, I almost hoped that the phone would be busy, or that it would sound free forever…
And if someone answered, but told me to call back, I would write it down diligently next to the name on the list… but then I would always end up not calling him back on the right day or at the right time.
And if someone answered me, and listened to me, I would tell for half an hour how many beautiful things my wonderful product could do for him.
And if someone answered me, they would listen to me and say, “No thanks”, I thanked them and removed the name from the list.
