A couple of days ago I was in a shop.
It was 5:30pm. One of the clerks had his son, 13, seated in a corner behind the desk.
“Do you have your personal assistant today?” – I asked them.
The father proudly replies:
“Yeah, but he is very upset because the soccer coach did not call him up for this afternoon’ match. Reason is he could not attend last training session, because he was invited by a prestigious university in Economics to do some math quizzes”.
(Note he is just 13 and he will not start university before 18-19, so he must have been really veeeery good in Math).
“WOW, a math genius, congrats!” – I say to the boy.
But the boy couldn’t care less.
He was too upset for the match he was missing. He could not stand the idea of his team mates running happy in the soccer field, while he was there seated in the shop with his dad, because he had had to do some stupid math quizzes in a boring university.
Another couple in the shop was listening to our conversation.
Just before leaving, the guy of the couple, he might have been 70, behaving like a professional life coach (which he likely was), gave to the sad boy this pearl of wisdom:
“Always continue to improve, boy. You will not be able to track your improvements on a daily basis, but just continue to improve. Keep going, and results will become visible every month. And remember this: those who improve a little bit every month, month after month, are destined to be the people who succeed in life”.
What a true gem.
Improve a little bit every day. Likely, you will not be able to notice and profit from your progresses on a daily basis. But progresses will be visible every month. And at the end, this habit will bring you to succeed.
So, the other day I learned that.
And today I’m trying to improve by implementing what I learned: that’s why I liked to share this story with you. I don’t know (nor I care) if I will profit immediately. Maybe yes, maybe not. Anyhow, profit is in the journey itself.
